Drafting Methods Section
Now that you have decided what you will do for your field research, it is time to write the methods section to your revised research plan (this will also be the methods section for your final paper, so it is important that you write in past tense). As we have gone over in class, you will present your methods in as much detail as possible. The goal is for your research to be replicable--this means that another researcher can easily repeat the steps of your research (remember the details from the methodology sections of student papers that we deemed as more successful). You should be able to describe and justify every step of your research methodology. Explain what you did, what you asked, and why.
Remember, these steps are flexible. You will likely need to make adjustments based on what is necessary for your research area and methodology. With that said, these steps are a great jumping off point for writing an effective and detailed methodology section that is replicable and viable for your final project.
Here are some steps to follow:
1. What type of study (interview, survey, observation/focus group) did you conduct, and what was its purpose? {notice that this question along with the others is in past tense, and I want your response to be in past tense too- this will save you a load of time in the end because you will not have to go back and make everything past tense}
Start with: I conducted a _______________ in order to __________________.
2.Where/with whom was your study conducted? Why did you pick this group?
Start with: I studied/observed/surveyed ______ # of people (adults/students) in __________ because ____________.
3.How did you chose your participants?
Example: My participants were chosen based on their willingness to participate in my study and under the criteria that they had taken the FCAT Writes exam and Composition I at UCF. I chose this criteria because _______________.
4.What were you looking for in your study, or what types of questions did you ask your participants?
Start with: In my ___________ I asked questions regarding ____________. These questions were important because___________.
OR: I conducted a study that required my participants to ___________ because _____________.
5. Provide examples of your questions, and explain why these examples are important.
Start with: For example, I asked the question ______________ because ____________. Also, I asked ___________ because ____________.
6. If you asked additional questions or elaborated on any part of your study, insert the phrase in parenthesis: (See Appendix A for a list of all survey/interview/study questions).
7. What did you want to find out by conducting this study?
Start with: By conducting this study, I wanted to find out ____________________.
Example:
I conducted a survey in order to trace the factors that cause Composition students to experience writer's block when writing their papers for Composition class. I surveyed 60 Composition II students at UCF who experience writer's block because these students had written papers in Composition class and had experienced factors preventing them from writing. My participants were chosen based on the criteria that they had written papers for Composition class, and they claimed to experience writer's block on a frequent basis.
In my survey, I asked questions regarding the students' writing habits and fears about writing, in order to trace any similarities that may cause writer's block for these students in their composition classes. These questions were important because they allowed me to study both the circumstances from which these students were being blocked from writing, as well as the assignments that may have caused this anxiety. For example, I asked the question, "What are you worried about before you start writing your composition papers?" because I wanted to see the fears students had in relation to writing. I also asked, "what types of writing assignments do you find most stressful for you?" because I wanted to see if similar assignments caused students to experience writer's block within their composition courses (See Appendix A for a list of all survey questions). By conducting this survey, I wanted to explore the factors contributing to the writer's block experienced by composition students, in order to see if and how these stresses can be potentially addressed.
I conducted a textual analysis in order to discover to what extent society’s view on marijuana legalization has changed over the past couple of decades. I studied 6 scholarly articles and books about the legalization of marijuana. The sources were chosen based on what the articles were about and what they were trying to accomplish. I chose this criteria because I wanted to only use articles that gave information about marijuana and I wanted to make sure that not all of my sources were written by people trying to persuade people to be for legalization of marijuana.
ReplyDeleteIn my textual analysis, I was looking for the rhetoric that the authors used to try and persuade people to be on their side. This is important because I wanted to see how and why people change their mind on the topic. For example, a lot of my articles were written for the purpose of trying to get people to be for legalization. These people knew the audience they were writing to and needed to use a specific rhetoric in order to convince those people that legalization is not bad. By conducting this study, I wanted to find out how much people’s opinion on marijuana has changed and why it has suddenly changed.
I conducted a survey in order to collect data regarding the positive or negative effects social media has on romantic relationships. I surveyed 50 young adults who had social media accounts and were involved in a relationship, with most of the participants from the University of Central Florida. My participants were chosen based on their willingness to participate in my study and under the criteria that they were a young adult, owned a social media account, and were involved in a romantic relationship.
ReplyDeleteIn my survey I asked questions regarding their relationship, and how it is effected by social networks. For example, one question may ask “On a scale of 1-10 how important is it to you that your significant other posts pictures of you on their social media profile?”. These questions were important because they allowed me to collect quantitative data in relation to my research. This data permitted me to make conclusions regarding the positive or negative effects of social media. By conducting this study, I wanted to find out if social media, overall, had a more positive or more negative effect on romantic relationships.
I conducted a textual analysis in order to look into the ethics classes that are now required in most medical schools and also the periodical training that medical professionals have to go through and how we can bring the ethics aspect into their training. By looking into the different classes that are now required for medical students we found gaps in the classes and came up with different approaches that might work better. I looked at the class description and also the class syllabus if possible and compared what was the same and also the things that set each class apart from the other. I did this because that allowed me to be able to draw conclusions as to what is standard and what classes set some schools apart. I also got to see what classes are out there now and think what I thought would be beneficial to have being taught in the schools. Similarly, I looked into the periodical medical training that is needed to keep your license and how that was addressing the ethics problem in the field. I analyzed the curriculum of the ethics training and also the ratio of the time spent on that compared to everything else. I did this because it is not only important to educate the future medical professionals but also the professionals already in the field. This is important because I identified gaps in the classes that are being required right now and hopefully those can be corrected and we can keep moving further in the medical field as far as ethics go.
ReplyDeleteI conducted a textual analysis in order to study what kinds of messages these female pop artists convey through their songs. I studied a total of ten songs. The songs were split up so I studied two songs from each artist mentioned above in my introduction, one was a very popular song of theirs and the other was one that carried an important message geared to females. I chose these certain songs from each artist because their most popular song has the largest audience that most people know. The other song I chose is not their most popular song, but contained lyrics that had more nuanced than their largest hit. Below is my list of songs from each artist. Their most popular song is listed first.
ReplyDeleteMadonna: Vogue (1990), Material Girl (1984)
Whitney Houston: I Will Always Love You (1992), I’m Every Woman (1992)
Spice Girls: Wannabe (1996), Spice Up Your Life (1997)
Taylor Swift: Shake It Off (2015), Mean (2010)
Beyonce: Crazy in Love (2003), ***Flawless (2013)
Lady Gaga: Born This Way (2011), Hair (2013)
In my textual analysis, I coded the lyrics in the artist’s two songs. My coding consisted of highlighting words that are positive to women, negative to women, and the rest were not marked as neutral words. Once I highlighted the different words or phrases in each song, I took that number and divided by the amount of total words in the song, then multiplied that my 100 to get a percentage. Once I got all the percentages from every song, I did two rankings: one on how many positive words were in each song, and one for how many negative words were in each song. (See Appendix A for the lyrics coded from every song). By conducting this survey, I wanted to find out which artist that the most positive and most negative messages towards women in their songs, and see how it related to what other scholars were saying about this artist.
I conducted a textual analysis to determine whether or not social media has a positive or negative effect on intimate relationships. I looked for sources, mainly popular websites, that had conducted surveys asking participants about their intimate relationships and the effects that social media plays so that I could get the most accurate information. While searching for sources, I specifically looked for ones that focused primarily on popular social networking sites and the influence that they have as that is what my research question is heavily concentrated on. These sources were really helpful as they provided me with the necessary data to try and form a concrete conclusion as to whether or not social media has an overall positive or negative impact on intimate relationships.
ReplyDeleteI conducted my research by analyzing Facebook pages of competing businesses in order to learn what tactics are more successful in business social media accounts. I observed 4 Facebook pages for two different competing companies because I wanted to see if there would be a difference in my results for international companies and local companies. I chose my specific Facebook pages because Coca-Cola and Pepsi are very well known and are looking to achieve the same goal. I chose Blaze Pizza UCF and Pie Five Orlando because they are local companies in the area that sell the same items with the same concept. In my study, I compared the amount of followers for each of the Facebook pages to the type of feedback they were getting from customers along with photo likes and comments and the amount of video views they receive. These questions were important because it showed which of the businesses are having the most customer interaction through social media and the type of media feedback they are receiving. For example, Coca-Cola and Pepsi both made Facebook posts relating to spring break. Coca-Cola was overall more successful with this because their post catered to all ages and received many more comments and likes than Pepsi’s post. For the local businesses, I looked into the same things as the larger companies. I wanted to see if there was a difference in my results for smaller companies. By conducting this study, I wanted to find out what tactics are best to use when running social media pages for businesses. I wanted to see if there is a difference in the way the social media pages are handled depending on the size of the company and the style of the posts. I learned that difference social media motives need to be used when running Facebook pages for various sized businesses.
ReplyDeleteI conducted an interview process in order to get personal experiences and a concussions effect on different people. I’m interviewing 15-20 people that formerly played football and suffered at least one football related concussion because my topic is about a concussions impact and its long-term affects. I wanted to get a closer observation of the experience of suffering a concussion from people’s perspective. I picked this group because my question is to what extent do concussions affect players lives so by interviewing people under this criteria I can get a perspective of the affects of concussions on former football players. My participants were chosen based on their willingness to partake in my study and under the criteria that they had formerly played football and experienced a minimum of at least one football related concussion. I chose this criteria because my question is to what extent do concussions affect players lives so by interviewing people under this criteria I can get a perspective of the affects of concussions on former football players. In my interview I asked questions regarding their personal experiences with the concussions they experienced while playing football. These questions were important because it shows the various affects of concussions from person to person. For example, I asked the question, “Have you noticed any change in your daily life from these concussions?” because I wanted to see if there was a significant impact of concussions on their life after they have suffered them. I also asked the question, “How many concussions have you encountered from playing football?” because I wanted to see if I could get a correlation of number of concussions to the extent of the impact of concussions on football players. By conducting this interview I wanted to discover the impact of concussions on football players health and its notable effects on the players themselves. Also I wanted to find out concussions effects on a personable level to better understand what it is like to encounter and better a concussion.
ReplyDeleteI conducted textual analysis on several television family sitcoms in order to investigate the overall positive and negative ways in which fathers were portrayed on television. I collected one sample episode from each of these five family sitcoms: The Goldbergs, Black-ish, Last Man Standing, Modern Family, and The Middle. I selected these shows because they were ranked as top shows by the public and were currently airing on television, which made them prime candidates of influence to society in general. Each episode was a newly airing one and all of them came from the same one-week period. I then transcribed the audio of each sample episode to create text documents of every conversation and interaction that happened within each one. This allowed me to closely examine the specific interactions and remarks relating to and involving the fathers on the shows. I then watched each episode and duly marked each and every father interaction as I followed along with each transcript. In addition to marking each interaction I appropriately noted each one’s specific characteristics, such as body language, eye contact, and tone of voice.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching each television episode and marking the specific interactions of father figures, I began coding them into proper categories. My initial coding led me to categorize each father interaction in every show as a positive, negative, or neutral portrayal based on its previously collected characteristics. This process allowed me to separate the negative, positive, and neutral portrayals of fathers in a numeric way and average them to see which types of portrayals were more prevalent in each individual television show. I also utilized the characteristics of each interaction to rank each one on a strength/weakness scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the weakest, 10 being the strongest). This gave me a basic idea of how each interaction came across to viewers in terms of strength, emotion, and passion.
The procedure continued further in a manner similar to the methods of Pehlke et al, as I grouped interactions into several common themes and subjects. Once these groupings were formed I analyzed them by noting patterns and comparisons within them. I then compared the groupings of interactions with one another to search for commonalities and differences between them. These comparisons included general characteristic ones as well as average strength/weakness ratings and positive/negative portrayal ratings. This technique allowed me to note the common themes and attitudes present in father interactions on television to see what was actually being conveyed to viewers about fatherhood and how strongly it came across. By conducting this analysis, I wanted to obtain a general idea for how fathers were currently being portrayed on television family sitcoms and how strong those portrayals came across to viewers. From this collective data I wanted to draw correlations and conclusions relating to how current television fathers influenced and affected real fatherhood through their portrayals.
I conducted my textual analysis in order to explain in simple terms, the scientific understanding we currently hold on Extra-terrestrials. In Carl Sagans’ Novel “The Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark”, he stresses the importance of skeptical thought and evidence based research. In the genre of aliens, there is a blinding cloud of irrational, streamlined thought derived from science fiction and paranoia over conspiracies. Now that we actually have the capability to search for the truth behind whether aliens exist and what their nature might be, its time to set the story straight. When conducting my research, I focused on studies directly related to the fields of Astrobiology, Astronomy, Biology, Statistics and Emerging Technology. I followed keywords such as SETI (search for extra terrestrial intelligence), evolution, planetary habitability, and drake equation into their subsequent fields.

ReplyDeleteI conducted a survey in order to obtain a more accurate representation of the issue that is my topic. My topic or issue was Is to what extent has the death penalty been effective in the past 15 years? This survey yielded a more accurate response because in all of my sources it was predominantly about experts just collecting data from other experts that didn't necessarily represent the every day person, and I believe that this topic mainly effects the every day person. I surveyed 26 UCF students from my floor, most are freshman but there are a few sophomores and a couple of juniors, because they consist of the majority of the population that can vote, the every day average people. My participants were chosen based of of their willingness to participate and ability to vote (age 18). In my survey I asked questions regarding religion, political party association, and just general beliefs. For example I asked the question what religion do you practice because this cane determine if you are pro life or not. I also asked what political party do you associate yourself with because this will determine if you are more for, or against the death penalty. Finally, I asked questions like do you think someone should be executed for their crimes? To determine the same thing. These questions were important because this will give me a better picture on the issue of whether or not the death penalty should be abolished or not. In the end I found that the majority of people think that the death penalty should stay.
I conducted a focus group in order to gather opinions and information about how the arts have affected students’ lives. My focus group consisted of 5 students involved in the Glee club here at UCF, and 5 students involved in the theatre department. I picked these two groups due to the fact that the Glee club shows the semi-serious arts training, compared to the theatre department whose training is extensive. Along with these reasons, many students in Glee didn’t have a background education in the arts, giving me different types and resources on how an arts education can benefit a students, no matter the age. My participants were chosen based on their willingness to participate in the study. The criteria for the study was based on whether a student had an arts education in the past or whether they are just beginning an arts education, and how much it has affected them already.
ReplyDeleteIn my focus group, I asked questions regarding grades, awards/honors, experiences, motivation, and organizational skills. These questions were important because due to other studies done by researchers, those who are involved in the arts have excelled academics, are more motivated, and tend to have good organizational skills. For example, I asked how many times they have turned an assignment in late, because often times, an arts student will get always know exactly when an assignment is due. I also asked how motivated they were to graduate from college with honors, knowing that many students may not have the motivation to put in the work to graduate, let alone with honors or early. (See Appendix A for a list of all survey/interview/study questions). By conducting this study, I want to find out how the arts can affect a student in his/her academic life, as well as social life. Do students with an arts education have more of a chance of success than someone who did not have a life within the arts?
I conducted a survey with different women that attend the University of Central Florida between the ages of 18-22. My participants were chosen at random as they volunteered to complete a hard copy of a survey at one of the primarily crossed locations on campus. I did not ask people whether they wore makeup before I surveyed them, and I attempted to keep the types of people as broad as possible.
ReplyDeleteThe survey was in the form of a questionnaire and asked how often the person wears makeup each week, on a scale ranging from 1-7.
They were asked general questions about how they feel with the makeup on versus how they feel with it off. Questions about the types of makeup worn were also asked, with an extensive list of different types presented.
A focus group was created accounting for the wide ranges of responses, and then more specific interviews were assessed. The interviews asked for a general outlook on where people wear their makeup and what they think that says about them.
The aspect I am trying to add to the conversation is a review of where the individuals wear their makeup, in attempt to find correlation to anxiety, depression, and other psychological effects found to harm women’s self-esteem while wearing makeup.
I gave a specific list of the places the participant would normally apply makeup in preparation to go to that specific place.
To conduct my own research on service failures in the hotel industry, I organized a textual analysis, focusing on three American lawsuits that have been resolved within the past four years. The first case I analyzed was a lawsuit that a hotel guest in Des Moines, Iowa filed against Embassy Suites, Hilton Worldwide, and Atrium France III in regards to a sexual assault. The second case I studied was a lawsuit that a Red Roof Inn guest near Washington, DC filled against the hotel in regards to bedbugs. The third lawsuit I researched was different than the first two because it didn’t involve a hotel guest directly. The hourly employees from the Hilton Los Angeles Airport hotel sued the Hilton for withholding wages. All three of these cases were in the United States which was important to my research considering the scholarly articles I studied were all done out of the country. I chose to analyze these three cases because they were different from each other and I could look at what the three different hotels did to fix the service failure.
ReplyDeleteI conducted a survey and interviews in order to understand how service dogs have impacted the psychological well-being of individuals. I surveyed and interviewed 8-12 people with service dogs who received their highly trained assistance dogs from a nonprofit organization—Canine Companions for Independence. My participants were chosen based on their willingness to participate in my study and under the criteria that they had their service dog for at least 6 months. I chose this criteria because I believe that individuals should have been partnered with their service dog for at least 6 months in order to see an affect on well-being before and after receiving their service dog. In my study I asked questions regarding anxiety, stress, depression and self-esteem. These questions were important because they covered multiple aspects of psychological well-being. For example, in the interviews I asked the question “Explain the affect your service dog has on your anxiety?” because I wanted to see how beneficial service dogs have been to an individual’s anxiety. Also, I asked the question “When you feel depressed, does your service dog comfort you?” in order to find out what affect service dogs have on depression. For the survey, I had participants rate their anxiety, stress, and depression before and after receiving their service dog on a scale from 1-10 (See Appendix A for a list of all survey and interview questions). By conducting this study, I wanted to find out the impact service dogs have on the psychological well-being of humans, in order to understand how these service dogs benefit the lives of individuals.
ReplyDeleteFor my study I decided I will be interviewing 8-10 people in order to get their opinions and gain any information they have on increased television usage in our youngest generations and how it is affecting today’s children. I will be interested in all effects, positive or negative. I will be specifically targeting two different groups of people. The first being parents, most likely family friends, who have both older children and younger children. The second group will be my fellow classmates who have younger brothers and sisters. I am targeting this group of people because I believe they will be a good fit to accurately answer questions such as how they believe their younger siblings or children watch more or less children than their older siblings. I believe they will able to compare their own experiences to their younger siblings and parents will likely be able to compare their children and also compare their television experience to that of all of their children. I will ask them some specific questions such as between the ages 10-12 how much television do you think you watched on average daily? How much do you believe your younger sibling/children watch television daily? How do you feel television effects their social behaviors? How do you believe television effects their cognitive abilities and test scores? Do you think their television viewing habits have any positive or healthy effects? I believe these questions will accurately address my overall research which concerns how the increase in technology has made television a very popular medium and the effects of this increase in television viewing in children in particular. I wish to find out first hand experiences straight from the topic of this study. I believe this will provide real time and accurate information that will be useful to my research.
ReplyDeleteI conducted a survey in order to determine how social media and the internet has effected how music is marketed to people. I asked about six people as to whether or not they noticed songs from movies, commercials, or by hearing it on the radio. I also asked whether they have their music downloaded to their phone or if they use an app to stream their music. I asked the questions because I was wondering if how they used their music and if they also heard of new songs mostly from social media. I picked the six people, including my mom, and five of my friends who seemed diverse and listen to different types of music. By conducting this study, I hoped to find how these people heard their music, how they even heard of the song, and if it impacted them through social media. I found that a lot of them went on the “top hits” of iTunes and found their songs off there while many discovered songs through soundcloud and Pandora radio.
ReplyDeleteI conducted a survey in order to find out if there was any correlation between social media usage and fitness results. I surveyed about 50 of my peers who I felt, based off of my knowledge of them, had a decent amount of fitness knowledge and used social media as well. These people did not necessarily use them in conjunction but that was what the survey was supposed to reveal.
ReplyDeleteIn my survey, I asked questions regarding the fitness habits of my peers, in order to get a deeper understanding of the link between social media and fitness. For example, I asked the question, "Do you post pictures of yourself working out on social media?" because I wanted to see the actual percentage of students who feel comfortable enough showing off their bodies. I also asked, "Based off the previous questions, whether you do or do not post pictures of yourself, if you did where would you post and why?" because I wanted to see if one social media platform is more friendly to those with dreams and aspirations than the others. By conducting this survey, I wanted to explore the link between social media and fitness and see if connection within social media helped people stay true to their fitness goals or even start working out.
I've conducted a textual analysis on songs that fall within the hip hop/rap genre in order to analyze if hip hop artists have a certain theme that they talk about in their songs. I studied the meaning behind several of the texts from different songs to because I wanted to see if these artists use certain texts or repeat phrases in their music. These songs were chosen based on the popularity of the artist in correspondence to the popularity of the song.
ReplyDeleteI performed a textual meta-analysis of academic journals and published studies regarding the gender pay gap in the medical field. As a female college student with a plan to advance in the medical field, the primary drive behind my research was to get a better view on the demographics of medical schools, hospital employees, and more specifically, the medical specialties. While prior research (1900’s) states that the gender pay gap is miniscule, I aimed to find the change and what the contributing factors were. I used the UCF Library Database and Google Scholar for my research. With my laptop, I searched key words such as “gender pay gap in medicine” or “gender gap in physicians” in order to find the proper sources pertaining to the topic. After realizing that a majority of the studies collected data from nationwide surveys based on physician’s demographics and income statistics, I decided that conducting a survey of my own wouldn’t be nearly as valid as the information I had right in front of me. I limited the search to only provide sources that were peer reviewed and academic articles/journals to ensure a quality analysis of credible information. I also searched for studies that had credible citations, such as national surveys or focus groups at major hospitals. For example, one of my sources studied the data collected from a nation-wide survey, while another source examined the information collected from a focus group specifically of radiologists at a hospital. This way, the methodologies of my sources varied, leading to a wide range of data collection and a possible difference of conclusions. After examining 8 studies on the gender pay gap in medicine, I sorted through and assigned each source to a subcategory- like a section of analysis on each factor that contributes to the pay gap, a section just for presenting and analyzing numbers and statistics, and a section summarizing and concluding the proposed solutions to the pay gap. These subcategories helped organize the information in order to make it flow more like a conversation would.

ReplyDeleteI conducted a literature analysis in order to find out different ways cosmetic surgeons are marketing their services in 2015 compared to 2010. My study was conducted on the internet on the site YouTube. I picked this site because it offered me the ability to get data from 2010 and 2015. Since I did a textual analysis I worked with the internet site YouTube. These sites allowed me to get current information from 2010 and 2015. By conducting my research on YouTube I narrowed my results on each to 50 results on each search term for each year which gave me 300 results I total. In my study I asked question regarding cosmetic surgery, its marketing and affect of electronics. These questions were important because they helped me understand the change in the marketing of cosmetic surgery from 2010 to 2015 For example, I asked the question how electronics have affected the marketing of cosmetic surgery because of how the technology has changed tremendously in 5 years; phones then had little internet capability to phones now in 2016. Also, I asked how sites like YouTube are portraying cosmetic surgery because YouTube is a widely used site and many people turn to it to learn more about things they are interested in. By conducting this study, I wanted to find out how the marketing of cosmetic surgery has changed and what factors are causing those changes.
For my research, I conducted a survey in order to find out what people think of those with mental disorders. The questions included in the survey varied in content. I initially established whether or not the surveyor had a mental disorder, or knows someone who does. The questions I included ranged from whether one views someone with a mental disorder differently than how they view others, to whether or not they would want to befriend someone with schizophrenia. Some of the important questions that I asked were whether or not the person would go and get counseling if they had a disorder, as well as having them to check off different characteristics they associate to a certain disorder. The disorder I used was schizophrenia. There a lot of false assumptions made about them, for example that they are dangerous.
ReplyDeleteBesides the survey that I conducted, I interviewed people by putting them in certain situations where a mental illness was factored into the situation. The scenario I put everyone in was what they would do if they had recently got into a relationship and found out that that person had multi-personality disorder. Another scenario I would put them in was what they’d do if they noticed that their roommate stopped getting meals with them, and had noticed that they are often vomiting. I wanted to know how they would handle different situations.
Finally, I analyzed different films including Forrest Gump ,The Butterfly Effect, and A Beautiful Mind. By doing this I was able to get insight on how people with mental illnesses are portrayed in entertainment and media. This could have an effect on how people treat those with a mental disorder in real life.
If young adults are and have been the focus of aggressive tobacco promotional efforts than my peers as well as myself are the ones at risk. In order to cognitively pursue the level of affective marketing on university educated students I held a survey at random of full-time undergraduate students at UCF. With such diversity university wide I felt it would be most effective to hold a voluntary survey via Facebook.com in a closed group of only students attending the university. The survey was posted as a status with a following link attached which directed participants initially to a consent disclosure form. This form was important to include because participants would be asked to reveal personal information pertaining to their race and ethnicity that would later be compared to the universities diversity as a whole to reflect the similarity between my study groups variation and the group of undergrads as a whole. The survey that followed mainly addressed three basic questions with multiple options to select and a few sub-questions based on answers to those. I chose this criteria of survey in order to map the effectiveness of marketing strategies on this group.
ReplyDeleteThe three basic questions asked were: What relation and past experience do you consider yourself affiliated with tobacco use? How often are you exposed to pro-tobacco content? What do you rate the social acceptability of tobacco and cigarette use in your daily lifestyle? An additional question was added simply to see how many of the polled students were users or non-users. These initial questions were constructed to separate one extreme group, the ‘pro’ side, from the other extreme, the ‘con’ side, as well as identify the moderate percentage of the group. For this study the two extremes would comprise most results because those that fit in those groups would be further questioned as to why they answered as they did. This technique would frame the correlation between cultural backgrounds and where they stood as a result of those backgrounds mainly.
The number of participants was held at 100 for percentage reasons in calculating users and non-users. Which would evolve into a more complex ranking system pertaining to their culture.
