Revised Research Plan (Due 3/4 by 11:59pm)

The revised research plan is where you will describe how you will occupy the niche you identified in the literature review. Spend some time reviewing how the literature review sections transition into methodology sections of the student research papers we have read this term, and then decide on a method most appropriate for your topic. We will talk extensively about the methods section of your paper in class over the next few meetings.

The Task: Write a planning document that outlines the following:
1) Your research question: Write a paragraph describing your question and how you arrived at that question. Remember, your question may have changed since you first started your project. Use sources from your literature review to describe your niche.

2) The data you plan to collect to answer the question--ie, who you plan to study.

3) How you will go about doing that research. Be as specific as possible about the number of research subjects, how the research subjects will be chosen, and what you will do (interview, survey, observation, focus group, textual analysis, and so on).

  1. This is my revised research question because this is a big problem in the medical field today. Because of our changing society there are barriers that are present between patients and doctors due to a variety of things such as; race, sexual orientation, lack of communication, etc. This is why I think it is so important for this issue to be addressed because it is effecting the patient’s quality of care. There is a lot of research about the issue itself but less about how to fix the problem and even less about fixing the problem with doctors already in the field. I want to try and focus on what you can do to help implement these changes to the medical professionals already present in the field. To do this I want to look into the ethics classes that are now required in most medical schools and also the periodical training that medical professionals have to go through and how we can bring the ethics aspect into their training. To do this I will do a textual analysis of the different curriculums and different options to help fix this problem. Also a way to change this when society changes and have it run smoothly. By being able to solve this problem and keep curriculums ever-changing with society this problem will subside.

  2. Research Question: How has female pop icons influenced and shaped the ideas of feminism during the last 4 decades? This research question is a little different from my first research question. My first one was how female pop icons influence teenage girls, but after reading every article about this icons, feminism was a common thread between almost all of them. This question made more since than the first one, because their feminist messages do influence girls.
The data I plan to study is looking at a popular song from each artist, and analyze how their songs relate to the messages they convey to the public. This will be a textual analysis, so I plan on listening to the songs multiple times, and really looking at what the lyrics are saying in each of their songs. I will also take into account what type of song it is: slow, upbeat, rap, etc. and see if that has something to do with how they convey their message.

  3. My working research question is, "To what extent does service quality and service recovery effect a guest's loyalty to a hotel?" My question used to just focus on how important guest service is but as I've studied my articles, I have realized service recovery is a big part of gaining guests' trust and business. My sources explain what service recovery is but they don't use specific examples of service recovery in the hospitality field. I plan on studying three lawsuits that have been filed against hotels in America. I want to focus on America only because my sources were mainly from other countries. I will look at a case involving a guest who experienced bed bugs, a guest who was sexually assaulted in a hotel room, and a case where hotel employees fought against their company because they weren't receiving proper pay. Although the last case doesn't involve guests directly, I have found through my research, that guests at hotels respond to the way workers they interact with are treated. I want to see what different hotel companies are doing for guests who receive service failures and even employees who have been failed by a hotel. My personal research will be done via textual analysis. I will search for articles dealing with these lawsuits and hopefully discover what the people who were failed received for compensation.

  4. My revised research question is as follows: How do both negative and positive portrayals of fathers in American family sitcoms compare and compete with each other to influence the values and cultures of viewers? This question definitely changed from my initial one, as it now specifically examines the portrayals of fathers. Quite a bit of the research I gathered, like that of Brown and Pehlke et al, looks at the changing views of fatherhood alone on television over time in both positive and negative ways. Some of my other sources addressed the television family sitcom as a whole, but I figured this would be too broad of a topic to fully handle within the context of my own primary research. Therefore, since this specific niche interested me, and seeing how I will be a father myself one day, I decided to narrow down my research into the positive and negative portrayals of fathers on television and how they compete in their transmission to viewers.
The specific data I’ll collect in my primary research will be instances of positive and negative fatherly portrayals on television. This data will be collected through the method of textual analysis. Upon choosing appropriate family sitcoms for testing, I will transcribe an episode of each of them to use for my analysis. I will then document any and all father interactions in the transcriptions. These interactions will then be properly coded as positive or negative portrayals and as strong or weak portrayals. This method will allow me to see the dominating forms of father portrayals on family sitcoms, and how strong or weak those forms are in influencing the values of viewers. I feel that with the limited tools available to me this will be the most effective method for conducting research on the subject to see how positive portrayals of fatherhood on television interact and compete with negative portrayals. My research is crucial in defining how television has ultimately transformed the role of the father in today’s context and how this transformation affects the views and beliefs of fatherhood by society. The overall goal of this research is to expose and correct negative portrayals and connotations of fathers on television so that the true role of the father is seen again and clearly restored within the American culture.

  5. Originally, my research question was pretty broad. As I read through multiple articles and analyzed them, I came to the conclusion that my question had to be more particular. In doing so, not only would I be able to contribute to the discussion better but also focus on my niche of the topic and analyze it more thoroughly. My revised research question is as follows, in what way does social media effect and shape romantic relationships in teens and young adults today? Originally my question didn't solely focus on young adults, however through most of the articles I've read young adults seem to be most impressionable through social media, and will yield the most results. (Sinclair H. Colleen) The specific data I need will be collected through a survey/questionnaire. I will survey 50 students at UCF with a multiple question survey asking questions relevant to social media and its impact on their personal romantic relationships. (If less than 25 of the 50 individuals are not involved in a romantic relationship then more people will be surveyed.) The data collected will be crucial in making conclusions regarding my research question and will help me to add to the discussion.

  6. My research question is to what extent has the death penalty been effective in the United States in the past 10 years? After doing some research I have discovered that there is a change going on. I have found that more people are calling for, not just reform, but the abolition of the death penalty than ever before. The problem I have found with this research however is that none of them really took into consideration what the common people thought of about the death penalty. All of my articles seem to focus on people that are experts in the field and or work for the government, which leads to my research. I plan to ask at least 10 students at UCF on what they think of the death penalty and if they think it should stay or be abolished.

  7. My research question is, how do service animals affect the psychological well-being of humans? This is my initial question and I arrived at this question due to my interest in psychology, as I am a psychology major. Also, I’ve been around many people with service dogs, including my sister, and I have seen how helpful and beneficial they can be. So, I wanted to research the effects they have on the well-being of humans.
The data I plan to collect to answer my question is from people with service dogs. I will give them a survey and interview them in order to find out how their service dog affects their psychological well-being. I hope to have around 5-10 subjects to conduct my study and will choose them by how long they had their service dog, hopefully some longer than others. I will look specifically at how their dog has affect their anxiety, depression, and stress.

  8. My current research question is this: Considering the increased violence, the excessive costs, and the sub-par efficiency of animal testing, is it really worth continuing rather than implementing other alternatives in its place, and save the excess money to put towards progressing such alternatives instead? This questions progressed from my original question quite a bit, which was “what campaign strategies are the most efficient to end animal testing?”. My new question is broader, and I was able to create it after much research and gap identifications. I plan to study various cases of extremist groups attack, statistics about attack damages and costs of research, and the efficiency of alternatives that have been recorded compared to the efficiency of animal testing. I will perform these studies through textual analysis by comparing and contrasting various sources through synthesis.

  9. Originally my research was broadly addressing the changing perceptions of health risks, addictiveness, and social acceptability of tobacco in the 21st century. Concluding that as broad and overarching, my research evolved into the evolution of marketing strategies by the tobacco industry subsequently with open consumer knowledge of health risk and addictiveness today. The evolution will be emphasized based on the industries 'youth consumer' targets . From research I plan to blend a textual analysis and data collection from my UCF peers (the age group of targeted peoples, 18-24). First I will evaluate 3 different strategies that were most prevalent in marketing, point-of-sale, web tactics, and the linked tobacco and alcohol industry. After analyzing, subjects will be asked which of these they felt was most prevalent and effective in their lives, as well as their association with tobacco and finally questions that relate to their personal view on tobacco.

  10. My research question originally addressed how increases in technology have effected our youngest generations. This was a very broad question and I quickly narrowed it down to the effects of television on children. I chose television because it is relatively affordable in the 21st century and most children have access to television every day. My research question has now become: How is television effecting the cognitive and social behaviors of today's children? There have been countless studies focused on the effects of children watching TV and comparing their time watched daily to their test cores and studying which types of shows effect children in the most negative ways such as cartoons. What I wish to do textual analysis on since it has seemed to be overlooked is the jokes and actions hidden in cartoons that are adult material that are just snuck in every few episodes. I wish to perform textual analysis on a few episodes of a few different cartoons such as SpongeBob and possibly one other popular cartoon and search for material that is not appropriate for children.

  11. My research question asks whether we are alone in the universe or not. Although its a very broad question to research, I found it to be the easiest for me to pursue because of interest. There are many gaps i found in the literature where i could focus in an create a niche to examine but overall I would like to describe our current scientific status on the search for extraterrestrials and then detail the importance and impact that the knowledge would have. In a way I would also like my research to help explore the nature of the cosmos that we live in at the same time. I plan on continuing to collect data from the scientist working specifically in this field through mediums of academic journals, sites for the organizations at the forefront of SETI discovery and various carl sagan books Ive acquired over the years. My textual analysis will also take into consideration some scholarly lectures i've found on youtube.

  12. How does fitness combine with social media to encourage people to achieve their fitness goals? It took me a long time to work this question out. I knew what I wanted to research I just didn't know how to formulate the question to go along with the research but now I do! I am looking at different types of social media and how they contribute to more motivation when working out and living a fit lifestyle (Sabo, Park and Chul). I plan to study college students, as I feel those are the people struggling most with fitness. I will survey (ideally) 200 students. The research subjects will be girls in my sorority and other women in the Panhellenic community. I know this will create bias because it will be only women but the subject as a whole applies more to women anyway. It'll be a survey monkey survey asking questions I'm interested in learning the answers to.

  13. My research question is, "How does social media affect the growth of businesses and how companies are now publicizing?” My sources have explained the different marketing strategies used for business social media accounts to make them the most successful and why it is beneficial for businesses to use social media at all. They use a lot of comparison between different types of companies and different countries. For my own research, I plan to analyze the similarities and differences to the Coca-Cola and Pepsi Facebook pages. Since they are competing companies, they are looking to achieve the same goal of being the most successful soft drink company. I will look at which Facebook page is using their social media account the most beneficially. I plan to look at the number of followers, the amount of views on their videos, the amount of likes of their photos, and the types of customer feedback posted on their Facebook. All of my research analysis will be conducted by analyzing the Coca-Cola and Pepsi Facebook pages. From this research I hope to see firsthand the differences between how two major companies use their social media and which tactics are the most successful.

  14. My research question is "Do social networking sites have a positive or negative effect on intimate relationships?" I chose this question because I've always found social media and its impact on society to be quite interesting. The idea that a website where people can go to interact with each other can change the way we perceive others is something that I enjoy researching as I am genuinely intrigued to see just how much it can impact us as a society.
I plan to obtain my research through both textual analysis of my collected sources and by talking to college students in relationships in an attempt to arrive at some sort of conclusion as to whether or not social media has a negative or positive effect on relationships. In order to keep my research as accurate as possible, I will synthesize the data obtained from my textual analysis with the data I obtain from the students interviewed.

  15. My research question is "How do cosmetics effect the confidence of modern day women?" I arrived at this question as I realized that makeup products have as many negative effects as they have positive on the women who wear them. I can personally relate to feeling unconfident without my makeup on, and realized that a survey would help me understand how they effect other women my age as well.
My plan is to survey my fellow college women at UCF and ask them a series of questions about the places they wear their makeup to. As I preformed my background research, I noticed that questions about the places their participants wear their makeup to was never addressed, and I feel as though I can adequately add to the discussion by conducting this research. The places women wear their makeup can reveal a lot about how confident they are and when they feel the need to get "dolled-up."I plan to survey up to 50 women with a basic questionnaire and then create a focus group to obtain specific quotes as to how my research participants actually feel about their relationship with makeup.

  16. I chose to research how marketing has changed over the years, focusing on how technology has impacted it in particular. I personally love beyonce and the different ways she gets peoples attention, like the Super Bowl or going soon Oprah or her own TV HBO special. Besides her, and focusing on how marketing changed the music industry. They now have to worry about pirating and the distributers face challenges getting the rights from the artist. I want to focus on how the marketing tactics change peoples views or objectives on certain things. I plan to make a survey asking people as to what catches their eyes. Whether its a commercial or add online or something else.

  17. My working research question is, "To what extent does the stigma surrounding mental disorders affect the mentally ill’s lives?” This question is slightly adjusted from my original research question which was more focused on why people with mental health issues avoid seeking help. As I looked into the scholarly articles, I realized that there are a variety of effects that stigma has on those with mental disorders. So by broadening my research question, I can include the different ways the stigma can affect their lives. Not just the way it influences whether they seek counseling or treatment.
The data I plan to collect is to send out a survey that asks questions that can help me collect statistics on how people view mentally ill people. I also want to interview people and ask them what they would do in certain situations. For example, if they recently got into a relationship and they found out their boyfriend/girlfriend has multi-personality disorder, how would they react to this. I also plan on analyzing movies that have a character that has a disorder because they may influence how people treat people with mental illnesses.

  18. My research question is; How has the marketing for plastic surgery differs from how it was in 2010 to 2015? I feel this is a very important and relevant question to ask because more and more people are going through with cosmetic surgery in today’s world. I arrived at this question for several reasons. One reason was because is directly related to my major. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to practice cosmetic surgery in the future and I thought this would be a good way to find out more about it. Another reason was because I watch a television show called botched and it was interesting to see the people on it and their reasons. Since 2010 technology has advanced tremendously and I think this has had a huge impact on how cosmetic surgeons are marketing. The data I plan to collect will be collected from my textual analysis. In my textual analysis I will gather data from the social media YouTube and search for results to my search terms from the year 2010 and the year 2015.When doing my research I will have 3 search terms that I will be using; cosmetic surgery, marketing cosmetic surgery, cosmetic surgery and body image. I will use the first 50 results from each search and I will compare the data I get from the 2010 searches to the 2015 searches. This will help me understand how cosmetic surgery marketing has changes since 2010.
