Inquiry Questions (Due 1/26 and 1/29 by 11:59pm)

Considering Greene's criteria for generating inquiry based research questions, write an open-ended research question that you are interested in pursuing for the rest of the term.

Greene's Criteria:
1. The question can be answered with the tools you have
2. The question conveys a clear idea of who you are answering the question for
3. The question is organized around an issue
4. The question explores "how," "why," or "whether," and the "extent to which."
5. There are no prepackaged answers for the question
6. The question grows out of some issue or fundamental tension

After you write your research question, you are required to deliver some feedback to at least three of your peers. Your job as a reviewer of your peer's questions is to aid in the development and progression of the person's research project. How can the question be phrased in a better way? Are there offshoot questions that might help the person consider another angle to the question? If the question doesn't meet some of Greene's characteristics, what can be done to help? Might there be an interesting research method you could suggest? When you reply to a peer, you must reply to a peer who has less than three responses. It is important that everyone get responses from at least three people.

What is most important to me is that you are pursuing some subject that interests you. If you are really interested in your research project, this class will be much more worth your while. If you need inspiration, look at some of the videos I have posted on the course home page. Go to Ted.com and watch some of the world's best speakers. Read the opinions of bloggers and or the editorial sections of some online news papers. You might also check out some of these presentations:

    1. FEEDBACK: Are you targeting a the social pressures you get while your physically in the gym? or pressures to be fit and healthy?

      Delete
    2. I think this is a really good topic to study. I think there are many opportunities for you to get hands on with your research and actually go to a gym and observe people working out. From the way people actually work out to the way they dress, social pressure is extremely present.

      Delete
    3. This is cool because there are always so many people at the gym and if you have someone who isn't as experienced compared to someone who is, they may feel less confident in what they're doing even though they're doing the exercise perfectly fine.

      Delete
    4. This is interesting because it could be a factor for why some people don't go to the gym as often as they should because of the social anxiety they may get from it.

  2. To what extent has the increase in technology and technological trends effected social development in children?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think this is an interesting topic. What technological trends are you going to be focusing on? I think, in particular, social media would be an interesting technological trend to analyze further.

      Delete
    2. This is a great topic! You might want to focus in on one area of technology, as your question seems a bit broad. Another thing you might want to think about is how you are actually going to go about with the research. I think for a topic like this you will need to do a lot of textual analysis to see how others are researching and testing this.

  3. How does social media affect the growth of businesses and how companies are now publicizing?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think this would be a cool topic to study. Along with analyzing how social media impacts company publicizing, you could also analyze how companies in the past publicized themselves before social media, then compare the two.

      Delete
    2. You could possibly focus on just Twitter and Facebook, because they seem to be the easiest ways to get the word out there for businesses. Another direction you could take this is the effectiveness of each social media outlet in selling certain products. Ideally the companies use social media as a form of advertisement so you could look at sales vs advertisement on social media and analyze the results! Great work!

      Delete
    3. I think this would be a great topic as we are exposed to ads form businesses everyday while on social media but as many of us get annoyed by these ads it could be interesting to see the negative affects of this type of advertisement!

  4. How has female pop icons influenced the behavior of young females during the last five decades?

    1. I think you worded the question in a very clear way. I also think you did a good job of including all of Greene's characteristics. When conducting research, I would suggest looking at how gossip magazines portray female celebrities.

      Delete
    2. This is cool because I think people definitely base their actions or looks on someone they admire in the celebrity world. Some celebrities also have blogs they manage so they're able to interact with people. You could see what they say and if they promote anything on their.

      Delete
    3. I think this is a very interesting topic to discuss because things have definitely changed in society even since we grew up. I assume there is a lot of research on this!

  5. How extensive is the effect of home schooling on children's social interactions and academic success?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This is a very interesting topic, but is there a clearer way to get the message across with using less words? Also you should consider making a comparison to the academic success of students in public schooling. Your topic does a great job at meeting all of Greene's characteristics. When conducting research, I would look up the average student success of home schooled students as well as the average success of public school students and talk about the similarities and differences.

      Delete
    2. Great question, I think a good research method would be to conduct an interview with kids from both public school and home school kids and ask how well it prepared them for college.

      Delete
    3. This is a great topic to be looking into! I think it would be interesting to look into their involvement on campus to aid in your research.

      Delete
    4. This question is very broad, I would try and specify the question a little more or reword it because it is a little confusing

  6. To what extent has societies perspective on marijuana use changed in the past decade?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Along with analyzing how societies view on marijuana has changed, you could also delve into what circumstances may have caused this change in perspective. Medical discoveries, law changes, celebrity use, etc.

      Delete
    2. This is a interesting question because many states have recently legalized marijuana. I think it would be good to look at data from those states and see exactly why the voters chose to legalize it. Maybe in the states that haven't and look at arguments against it. Another angle would be to see how people in the 60s/70s viewed it and what the government commented and then see today how the government is treating it!

    3. Dope topic man, there's a whole lot going on with the economic side of this too that you could check out.

  7. To what extent has television transformed and affected American popular culture throughout the 21st Century?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You could also look at the the situation inversely. How has American pop culture transformed television and what is being portrayed because of it? You could also look at what is different about this in the 21st century as opposed to previous centuries. (:

      Delete
    2. I almost chose this topic as well! Seeing how television has progressed through the 21st century is very interesting. Your research question is phrased very well, but it might be a little too broad. You might want to look at a certain segment of television: reality shows, the news, dramas, or genre if you find it getting too overwhelming.

      Delete
    3. I think this could be very interesting especially if you were to focus on news stations in particular and what stories they decide to highlight in the 21st century vs previous times!

  8. To what extent does makeup influence the self-confidence of those who wear it in todays society?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think this is a really interesting topic to research due to the fact that makeup has become a secondary nature to the majority of girls in this country, but the question itself is very broad. Maybe question how women in different countries see makeup, compared to the United States? Or something to narrow in on your question.

      Delete
    2. This is a great topic to research cause makeup really has influenced many girls in today's society. Interviewing girls would be a great research method to see how it personally affects different people. However, maybe you could also research the influence makeup has had on women in past generations versus its impact on just today's society.

      Delete
    3. This is cool because the makeup industry seems to have expanded, especially their ways of advertising. It also has a huge correlation with girls' self esteem and there can be a lot of psychology used to support why it influences a girls self-confidence and personal image of being "pretty enough."

    1. I like this idea. Very interesting topic.

      Delete
    2. This topic is very interesting, how do you plan on gathering your information? I suggest that you should try and research how animals have affected the well being of humans in the past verses today.

      Delete
    3. I think this could be very interesting especially if you look into how psychologically dependent people become on their service animals.

  10. What are the misconceptions about addiction and it's treatment.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. FEEDBACK: Definitely information everywhere on this topic, but how will you narrow the research down to something of more detail and conduct your own research?

      Delete
    2. This is a really broad question for an interesting topic. You might want to focus more on one type of addiction: drugs, alcohol, technology addictions etc. Also you should probably rephrase it so that it starts with a how, why, whether, or to what extent to fulfill Greene's Criteria.

      Delete
    3. You are definitely getting at an interesting topic, however you need to narrow down what exactly you want to research. If you choose drugs or alcohol, it would be difficult to interview people who are or were once addicted because addiction is such a strong and difficult topic to discuss. But, I'm sure there are other ways to conduct your research if you stick with this topic.

  11. What factors contribute to a person’s idea that plastic surgery will help the better conform to societies wants?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I really like this topic, and I think you worded the question very well. I think it would be really interesting if you considered self esteem being a contributing factor in why people want plastic surgery. You did a great job at meeting all of Greene's characteristics. When conducting research, I would recommend looking into the average self esteem for the age group that you are looking into that gets the most plastic surgery done.

      Delete
    2. Great topic! A major factor which would contribute to the desire of plastic surgery would be the media. You can specifically look into celebrities who have undergone plastic surgery, and the praise they receive from the media and society in general.

      Delete
    3. I think this is a great topic as so many people are concerned about their image in the 21st century! It would be interesting to research what incourages this behavior and why people feel the need to change their figure in such a way!

  12. Why do different genres of music (or music in general) make people feel, think, or act a certain way?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good topic. Maybe try and focus on two specific types of music and compare the two.

      Delete
    2. This is interesting. Like i know when I go to the gym I listen to upbeat music compared to slow paced music because it get me going. I agree with Noah's idea. It may be hard to get every single genre.

      Delete
    3. Cool question. I think a good way you could do some research would be to select different songs from different genres and have a sample of people listen to all of them and ask how each song makes them feel.

  13. To what extent does social media affect relationships?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. FEEDBACK: What category and age groups of people will you be targeting? Possible comparisons to older generations who are not as fond of social media and their relationship success/failures..

      Delete
    2. This is a very interesting topic to research and I think you could go a lot of ways with it. I think that narrowing down your question a bit more will help you out because the question you have right now is pretty broad. You could compare men and women and how they react differently to social media or even focus on a small test group.

      Delete
    3. I am very interested about this topic and wold love to see the final outcome of your essay, but since relationships is very broad I would try to focus on a certain type...for example, boyfriend/girlfriend, mother/daughter, etc.

  14. How & why has tobacco use and the nicotine addiction attached to it changed in the past 50 years?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nice idea! If you wanted to narrow it down a little you could see how it has changed over specific generations, since every generation experienced tobacco use a bit differently. I would suggest using todays generation and one from the near past.

      Delete
    2. I think it would also be interesting to look at why people choose to smoke. Many trends in the 21st century seemed to be created so people feel "cool" or so that they can fit in with the crowd they wish to be a part of!

  15. To what extent does a hotel manager determine the quality of service provided?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This is a very interesting topic to look at! I understand you are looking at how effective a hotel manager runs all aspects of the hotel to produce quality service, but you could also investigate how other employees at the hotel perform their duties to provide service. Through this research you could make connections and see if there is a loss of quality service when passed from manager to employee. This could result in finding better ways for hotel managers to manage their employees that will increase the quality of service provided.

  16. To what extent has the death penalty really been effective?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm honestly really interested to see where this research may take you. This is such a huge question in today's society, and it'll be interesting to see what the majority of people may think. But the question itself is very broad. Maybe narrow it down to something questioning the death penalty related to the mental health of criminals? Or question how the idea of the death penalty has effected the minds of adolescence, and whether it has helped them to make better choices throughout their life?

      Delete
    2. Cool question. I think you should narrow it down a little though. I think it would also be interesting to research the costs of keeping inmates in prison for life versus the cost of giving them the death penalty and how that affects decisions.

      Delete
    3. I think this could create a great project because this is such a controversial topic for many people! Many feel it is necessary due to the crimes people have committed but others will never agree in taking away someone's life in such a way. Interested to hear where you go with this!!

  17. What is currently being done in the fight against animal testing and, from there, what alternative strategies could be established to continue this progression?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think this is an interesting topic to study. I like the second part of your question about what alternatives could be done because I think that would require a good bit of research. I think you also could look at restrictions for alternative testing such as cost.

      Delete
    2. This is a great question! Definitely head to websites like peta for some ideas, because they are a central place for all different types of animal testing cases. Peta can also be very intense in the ways that they fight animal testing, so that could also help you with the second part of your question, as to what other more effective strategies can be utilized. Peta usually sends letters to, and performs protests in front of, animal testing locations.

  18. What factors contribute to the forgiveness and rebuilding of trust in a relationship (or friendship) where one person broke the other's trust ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Although this topic is specific I think it could be interesting to study the mental affect it has on someone when their trust on someone is broken and how that changes one's ability to openly trust and even forgive others in these situations. Also how it may affect their social lives after their trust is broken.

    1. I think that this is a really important topic that needs to be addressed. Another way you could look at this topic is researching how not having fine arts in secondary schools affect the students.

      Delete
    2. I think this is an interesting topic to discuss because this is becoming so prevalent in school systems today! Definitely needs to be addressed and I think you can take this project many different ways with this!

  20. What kind of medical practices are more popular/successful in different regions around the United States, and why?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Although I believe health practices in the US in particular may be similar throughout the country for the most part, it may be interesting to compare the United States to other countries that have different medical practices. For example countries or particular groups of people that believe in more natural remedies in comparison to the antibiotics and steroids many of us are exposed to in the United States!

  21. How does being involved with Greek life give you better professional opportunities once graduated?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think this will be really interesting to research because being in Greek life definitely does have benefits especially when applying for future jobs. Since we have Greek life at UCF, it would be easy for you to find a group of people who were involved in Greek life to interview. You could talk to graduate students who also are in the workforce to see how Greek life helped them get their jobs.

      Delete
    2. This is a cool topic because there a lot of stereotypes and assumptions attached to being a part of Greek life that aren't true. You could show the positives involved with being involved.

  22. How and why have injuries and concussions progressed in the NFL?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This is a very cool topic to research! I'm sure you're familiar with the recent movie out called Concussion. You might want to rephrase your question though to more clearly state what you are trying to get at. Will you be looking at the safety of players and how that affects the amount of injuries? Or will you dive into the legal ramifications behind injuries and concussions and how the NFL tries to hide certain things from the public eye? These are just some questions to think about as you go forward with your research.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think this is something really interesting! It would be cool to see what makes students the most tired or maybe if a routine (even a tiring routine) could help student attain a more regular sleep schedule. I think there are a lot of angles to look at this question! Maybe if you're doing an activity by activity analysis you might want to focus on only a few activities (2-3) rather than everything a student could be doing. Great work!

  24. To what extent does having a mental illness affect your relationship with other people?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think this is very interesting to research because there are many people who may try to hide their mental illness to others in comparison to those who accept it and openly discuss it with others! It could be interesting to research if their acceptance of their illness plays a role in their social behavior!
