Working with human subjects can be tricky business, but luckily for us, you will not be poking or prodding any of your research subjects (so there should be minimal risk to those you plan to interview, survey, or experiment with).
With that said, it is still critical that you disclose information to the human subjects you are working with. Universities have developed an Internal Review Board (IRB) system to make sure researchers comply with local, state, and federal ethics standards. As students who are in a first-year writing course, you do not have to complete IRB training to work with human subjects, but it is critically important that you disclose your intentions in writing to the people you are working with.
Please review the following information provided by Colorado State University:

Upon reviewing the link above, you are tasked with developing an informed consent disclosure form to give to any participants you are studying. The site above gives plenty of information about what should appear in your disclosure form. Participants should sign the form and return it to you. You should provide each participant with an additional copy if said participant wants it for his/her records.
If your research involves textual analysis and you are not working with human subjects, please write a detailed outline about how your textual analysis will work.
I recommend you create your disclosure form as a word document and then paste it into the text box of this blog space.
Here is another link to a Google Images page that has many examples of Informed Consent Forms:

For each artist, I will be analyzing one of their songs. The artists are Madonna, Whitney Houston, the Spice Girls, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga. The songs I will pick will be based on their most popular song. For their songs, I will code and analyze who their target audience is for their song, what message they are trying to convey through their lyrics, and if their songs mention anything that has a feminist meaning to it. From this analysis, it will hopefully show how their songs relay their feminist message.
ReplyDeleteFor my research essay I have decided to preform a textual analysis. I plan to look at three different articles about hotel service failures that involved lawsuits. One involves a case of bedbugs, one involves a sexual assault, and the other involves a hotel not paying their employees. With these cases, I plan on seeing what the hotel did and how the cases affected the hotels reputation and their guests' loyalty. One of the biggest parts of owning a successful hotel involves having a good reputation and I think looking into the way hotels attempt to fix service failures will show how strong of a business they are.
ReplyDeleteThe method I will utilize for conducting my primary research is textual analysis. Instead of working with human subjects, I will actually pick apart the scripts of several family television shows to look for negative portrayals and positive portrayals of fathers in specific. After selecting appropriate television shows, I will transcribe them to obtain their scripts in text form. I will then proceed to watch the shows and read the scripts simultaneously, taking note of any interactions that involve the fathers. In this stage, any and all fatherly interactions will be documented to ensure all data is present and nothing is neglected in the process.
ReplyDeleteAfter the basic father interactions are noted, I will code and group them into categories of either negative or positive portrayals. I will perform this process cautiously and draw from previous research and methods to analyze the father interactions and guarantee their proper placement in categories. Upon separating the negative and positive portrayals, I will further evaluate each portrayal and interaction within each category in an effort to extract several key ideas and qualities they contain that collectively define them. Another thing I will note is the relative strength of each positive and negative fatherly portrayal to assess which portrayals dominate throughout the course of the shows. I will additionally number the amount of positive and negative interactions separately in each episode of each television show being examined.
This extensive process will provide me with ample qualitative data from the television show scripts on what types of positive and negative portrayals are present, how they are rightly defined, and how they compete to be the dominant messages to viewers. It will also produce quantitative data showing the amount of positive portrayals as related to the amount of negative portrayals in a given episode. This data can lead to further cross-referencing of different episodes and television shows to see how different shows portray fatherhood differently. It will also show valuable insight into what main portrayals are ultimately getting across to viewers, which may lead to why viewers’ values are influenced, as the dominating values and portrayals could possibly sway them more than others. All in all, this textual analysis will be very beneficial in looking at how positive portrayals and negative portrayals of fathers in family sitcoms interact with each other and what this means to viewers.
For my research I will perform textual analysis. I wish to analyze various popular children's shows in order to find exactly what children are taking out of these shows. I wish to find which shows have more interactive phrases, encouraging the children to get involved with the show and how that has an effect on what they get out of their TV watching. The choice of shows will be based on simply what is popular within the group of children in the study. They will be tested on their social skills and verbal communication skills. I plan on finding how interaction with the show changes children's cognitive abilities because the general consensus that the main problem with television is that it does not allow children to use their imagination nor "work" their brain enough to ensure proper development.
ReplyDeleteFor my research I will conduct a textual analysis by looking into three different animal rights activist groups, looking at their most-frequently used technique to end animal testing, and what the pros and cons of each are. My goal by analyzing this is to find the most effective technique, with the least amount of damage and money wasted, in the process. The first group I plan to look into is the Animal Liberation Front, which has been known as an extremist group that uses aggressive and even violent techniques, but has put an end to many animal testing/ laboratory breeding facilities. The second is PETA, who has been sending undercover members into laboratories to work and reveal secrets of those facilities that illustrate inhumanity and ultimately will get them shut down. The third group I would look into is the International Humane Society, which has set up online petitions to be signed to help animals in need. While the ALF has demonstrated violence, they have had many successes with ending inhumane animal testing, possibly much more than the other, more peaceful, campaigns. However, there is a great deal of damage done in the process, wasting money that could instead be put towards the creation of alternative techniques and advancing science. My goal through this analysis is to find over-all, which technique is the most effective, efficient, and worthwhile.

ReplyDeleteFor my research I will perform an analysis of posts on competing companies’ Facebook pages. I will be looking at Coca-Cola and Pepsi’s Facebook pages in my study. It is important that I compare companies that are competitors because the results could be very different for companies attracting a different audience or more specific geographical location. From looking at the amount of views they receive on their videos, the amount of likes and comments they receive on their photos, and the amount of customer feedback they receive in general, I will be able to see how the companies handle their social media differently and the different marketing strategies they use with it. From this I will be able to see which company has the most effective customer interaction on their Facebook pages thus proving which company has mastered their social media better.
ReplyDeleteFor my research i am performing a textual analysis. I am going to analyze various article about the general public's opinion on legalization of marijuana. I am going to see what each author says about people opinions and also figure out who their audience they are writing to is. It is important that I look at articles written by people who are both trying to persuade people to legalize and also not to legalize because both sides are very different and can even contradict themselves. I am going to see how these authors try and convince people to side their way and see what sort of rhetoric is used to convince people to legalize or not legalize marijuana.

The research I will be doing will be a textual analysis. I'll analyze different articles and peoples personal opinions that they may have on their websites in regards to the marketing in the music field. I'll analyze who the target audience is and see which method was most effective. This will allow me to see the different views on marketing in the music industry and how it may have changed because of worldly changes such as economy and the wars happening back in the day. Also how social media and the internet has changed the marketing. It will allow me to open doors. I may also conduct interviews on my peers and see what method of marketing caught their attention and worked best towards them.

Over the last ten years, secondary school systems have been cutting fine arts programs from our schools all over the country. Due to the No Child Left Behind Act, low test scores, and budget cuts, arts classes have been seen as less crucial to our children’s lives. But studies show, that fine arts programs can actually benefit children academically and socially, helping students become better prepared for exams, and life lessons learned early on. Students who have been a part of an arts program have also shown to have a lower chance of getting involved in recreational drugs, and correlate with less of a dropout rate.
Study Procedure
You will be asked to complete a survey online that will take about 15 minutes.
Foreseeable Risks
There are no foreseeable risks in this experiment.
Benefits
I hope for the project to benefit you by gaining information on the importance of the fine arts for students.

For my study I plan on conducting a textual analysis. I will analyze various articles on the public’s opinion on the death penalty. I will determine the author’s opinion on the death penalty and figure out who the audience is. It is important that I look at articles that take into consideration pros and cons because both sides of the argument because both sides have very unique arguments. I am going to determine just how effective the death penalty has been in the past ten years or so.
ReplyDeleteWorking with human subjects always brings up something difficult! I will most likely be conducting a textual analysis because connecting with doctors is a heard thing to do. The textual analysis will go in depth into what ethical standards are expected in the medical field today. Interviewing doctors about this would be much easier because you can get a first hand interview about the standards and how the patients feel about it. Trying to attain these results would be a stretch so if I can I definitely want that data but if not the textual analysis will be very in depth to these same questions. Ethical standards need to be looked at from both the doctor and patient point of view!
ReplyDeleteMy textual analysis on wether or not we are alone in the universe will begin by explaining why the question is important to us, thus validating the seriousness of my topic, rather than perpetuating a stereotype of obsessions with little green men. Next, we will go over where we are in the search by covering the habitability of our universe and how we know this. This section will cover questions such as, what percentage of planets are habitable and what conditions are required. Then this will connect to the question, if an area is habitable, what catalyst is needed for life to arise and evolve. Because the only example of life we have is our own, this section will also explore our own past and origins on this planet. The timescales involved in the evolutionary steps will be stressed in this section. Also, this is where many of the gaps in the literature will be exposed. Then, I will continue by explaining the evolution of technology involved in the search as well as the expected breakthroughs we will be having due to approaching advancements in technology. I will cover how our search has changed over the years because of these advancements and hopefully shock the readers with how advanced we actually are. The conversation will be concluded by exploring the consequences we may face during our search for extraterrestrial life. What does it mean scientifically, spiritually and philosophically for us if indeed aliens do exist?
